The Importance Of The Herring Run.

It is a very probable fact that the annual, year ending herring spawn plays a major part in our sea angling, principally in the latter stages of the year.  Some anglers might think because sandeel may well not be so prolific in November that our bass fishing is non existent this late into the season, a debatable statement to say the least. Innumerable fish species including the trophy sought sea bass feed customarily on herring, brit and the actual herring spawn.

Yesterday, thanks to Pat C. and target tracking technology I was privileged to have a front row seat for an extended period of time,  observing  whirl bonding mass schools of prime herring,  with a multitude of wildlife skillfully pursuing and taking full advantage of the welcomed banquette from above and below the oceans surface. An overwhelming experience to say the least! We did not observe any Whale presence on the day,  recorded sightings of the Fin and Humpback whales tend to be more noted during the herrings spawning season from December into late February but can very possibly be seen this time of year if conditions allow.

Due to periods of spasmodic rainfall and winds generally governed by a southerly direction, water clarity has decreased to the state that it is presently difficult to see how much our bass fishing can benefit from the herrings profuse presence. Bass are momentarily in numbers on our coastline, it is all about improvising and using whatever method necessary (soft - hard plastics) to get results during these fluctuating angling conditions.
